THEORY FOR COURT
REPORTING - IN-HOUSE STUDENT
This course
consists of 40 lessons contained in a Theory textbook. The
lessons cover learning the keyboard of the Stenograph Machine,
principles and rules of writing a phonetic shorthand and an
introduction to abbreviations and phases to utilize in
writing. All lessons have been dictated on master CDs, copies of which are distributed to students for
assignments. Students use their textbook and CDs and the
Instructor's guidelines to prepare their assignments.
Assignments are reviewed in live class with the Instructor.
Students are expected to be prepared to be called on to
participate and contribute to the live class session.

This course
is designed to take a student from 60 words per minute up to
200 words per minute of writing skill on the court reporting machine. 2-Voice Testimony and 1-Voice Straight
Material are the two elements comprising the Speed
Building foundation. 3 and 4-Voice Material is offered
periodically to help build designation skills.
2-Voice Testimony
This
consists of actual court cases and depositions which
demonstrates the wide range of terminology that is found in a
testimony-based setting. Expert technical to lay-person
questions and answers are used to increase speed, accuracy,
and vocabulary.

1-Voice Straight Material
This
consists of actual Jury Charges, Legal Opinion, Oral Argument
and Summations. This material differs from 2-Voice Testimony
in that one person is speaking rather than two. 1-Voice
Straight Material writing is interesting and special emphasis
is placed on stroking power and an attentiveness to detail in
verbatim writing.

All
dictation is given at timed speeds. Each class ends with a
dictated test for each speed level. Formats and supplemental
information are given to students. Suggested handbooks and
research materials are also discussed.
